Digitisation

Impact of digitisation on print based media

Over the years, digitisation has become more common and complex within print based media. For example, when we see a book, magazine or newsletter, we notice more complex images and high quality. It is easier nowadays to buy a camera, mobile or computer for a reasonable price and then create any type of media and then upload it to social media within seconds. This will travel around the world instantly. This links with prosumers and consumers as now anyone, not just people who work within the media can produce anything such as magazines and articles.

Evaluation Questions

 Evaluating my work:

1.  My media product uses several different aspects of a typical school magazine. For example, i have used a masthead for the title, an actor for the cover image, and different headings of text, and many other conventions a typical magazine would have.  I think that my product is developed as it is not a typical school magazine as they would not tend to have a student as the main focus. I also think that it challenges conventions of real media products as it is unique and styled differently.

2.  I think that my media product has a very clear representation of social groups; this group would be school. As my product is based on a certain school, i thought that relating the student to school and adding images of books and equipment provided would have a good representation overall. For example, stereotypically, a student who puts their head down, achieves good grades and likes to read, would typically be a great representation of a successful representation of the school.

3.  The media institution that would typically publish my magazine would be PaperBridge. This would be the one who would take in account my magazine as it has designed many other school magazines such as Brooke Weston and Corby Business Academy, both of which have a quite similar design to my product.

4.  The audience for my media product would be the parents of the student who attend the school. I specifically wanted my magazine to appeal to parents as in my opinion, they're the ones who would read the magazine. The reason i chose this audience is because there are a wide range of people who would have an interest in it. And i could ask for feedback to keep on improving in the near future as typically the parents would be more reliable than the children.

5.  To attract my audience, i would publish this magazine online and also in hand. This would gain a wider range of people as some people would not be able to gain access to this either online or through the post. To address my audience i would mention the magazine on social networking sites in order for it to be accessible when published. I could also mention it around the school and another way would be to send letters of text messages home to all the parents.

6.  I have learnt quite a lot from different technology whilst constructing my product. Such as when taking the main images on my phone, it tends to be quite clear on the device, but when processing and enlarging the image, it looses it's quality and can become blurry. I have also learnt that by using Microsoft Word to construct my front cover and contents page may have been a good idea. This is because when using PhotoShop to create these, it becomes very stressful very easily and makes the job harder as it is complex to use.

Final cover & contents page

Contents page draft 2 completed & annotated

Annotations: From my feedback on my first draft I have decided to add a lot more colour in order to make it brighter and effective. This overall creates a more appealing page for the reader as it is colourful and bond. Taking in account my feedback, I have decided to enlarge the school logo which really works well as the reader is aware and alert. Overall, I have decided to add writing next to the numbers in order for the reader to turn to a certain page of their choice; for my final piece, I will add somewhat of a description.

Draft 1 contents completed & feedback

Feedback:
This contents page has a good layout of images and has high and clear quality taken photos. There is a good variety and selection of images however the logo is good but too small. To improve overall to make it more effective it could have more colour to make things brighter. Even though this may be very simplistic, it works well as there are a selection of images to be drawn to and in states clearly what the page is.

Draft 2 cover completed & annotated

For my second draft of my front cover, I decided to make the title bigger and bolder. I purposely done this so that it stood out more and would make the audience aware of what the main subject is. To improve, I also switched each section around to make it look better and more presentable. Instead of having the school logo at the bottom, I decided that having at the top would be better and more successful as the audience would see it straight away as the purple is highly eye-catching. Also, by adding the 'autumn edition' just above the issue number, this makes the viewer aware of each different edition.

Front cover draft 1 completed & annotated

Feedback:
The picture is quite high quality which makes the student be the main focus. Also the logo is very simplistic which stands out also as it is a different colour and adds a burst of purple. The different sections work well as they are all clear and the audience can be drawn to each different section without difficulty. Also the background looks professional as it has a contrast in colours. To improve there could be a wider range of fonts for example using two or three different ones to make each heading stand out even better. Another way to improve could be to add more writing which will make it a little bit more complex.

Preliminary Task Brief

Preliminary exercise:

Using DTP and an image manipulation program, produce the front page of a new school/college magazine, featuring a photograph of a student in medium close-ups plus some appropriately laid-out text and a masthead. Additionally candidates must produce a DTP mock-up of the layout of the contents page to demonstrate their grasp of the program.
